Imagine swimming in blue crystal clear water and getting you feet down into white find sand. Now add stingrays to the picture. That’s what Stingray city is all about. Swimming with stingrays in Stingray City is a must-do experience when visiting Grand Cayman. Here is how to plan  a trip to Stingray City.

How to plan a trip to Stingray City

Since the Stingray City located the middle of North Sound, you cannot drive there. There are a lot of tour operators on the island that offer Stingray City tours.You can either book your tour in advance , or jump in on the last-minute tour; the tours always spaces available, so even if don’t book in advance there is a very good chance you will be able to visit Stingray City. We went on the tour with The Captain Marvins.

When to go?

While  you can swim with stingrays in Stingray City year round I recommend visiting it February to late March to avid crowds.

Is it safe to swim with stingrays?

It is safe to swim with ray, but as usual you need to follow the safety rules. While stingrays are gentle and shy creatures, they can sting. So, you will need to excessive caution when swimming with rays and especially when feeding them. The tour guide will provide you instructions on how to hold the pieces of fish for the rays.

What to bring?

Bring the towel, sunscreen and drinking water. Your tour operator might have water available but it’s always a great idea to bring water just in case.

Swimming with Stingrays.

It takes about 15 minutes to get to Stingray city from the pier. When the boat approached the area, we saw see rays, a lot of them swimming in bright blue water.
Your guide will give you instructions on how to swim with rays. Basic idea here is to be gentle and in case close encounter is not desired, just step away. If do not hold food, the rays most likely won’t follow you.
Once you get into the water, the rays will already be swimming around d the boat and waiting for good. You will spend dove to be in the water getting comfortable around stingrays. The guide will give you fish to feed them. Then you will be able to swim around those awesome creatures sons more time and even hold a stingray.

How to hold a stingray?

Most likely your tour guide will give you assist you in holding a ray. The general idea is to open your hands, hold them still and let the ray swim to you. Some of the rays will stay longer floating on your hands and  it will look like you are holding a ray.

Final thoughts.

Visit to stingray city was a highlight of my Grand Cayman  trip. Follow your guides instructions on how to feed and hold stingrays. I love swimming with stingrays, it was the highlight of my Grand Cayman trip. love holding a ray and  swimming around stingrays in bright blue water.
