There’s no trip to Guanajuato without visiting Museum of the Mummies of Guanajuato. The museum was on my list for a long time because of its interesting history. Here is what to expect when visiting the Museum of the Mummies of Guanajuato
Want to see several dozen of real mummified bodies? How about 8 months old baby mommies? And if that is not disturbing enough, how about 6 months fetus mummy, the smallest mummy in the world?
Sounds exciting? If yes, this museum is a must see for you in Guanajuato.
Visiting Museum of the Mummies of Guanajuato
Ready to see the mummies, I was standing in the line to buy a ticket to enter the museum. Somewhere near the ticket booth, I had a second thought and almost turned around.
The museum is equally unique, disturbing and educational. The history behind the museum is as disturbing as the museum itself.
Museum history
So what the origin of the Guanajuato Mummies?
Due to a Guanajuato cemetery location, the bodies were placed and stored in crypts-style structures instead of being buried in the ground. People had pay a fee to keep their relatives buried in those structures. When city did not receive the recurrent payment, the body was exhumed and moved to a temporary building that later became Mummy Museum of Guanajuato.
Dry Guanajuato climate and lack of oxygen in crypts slowed down(in some cased stopped) natural bodies’ decomposition process and cause mummification.

Final thoughts.
While I was super uncomfortable walking around the museum, I’m glad I didn’t turn around and still decided to see the museum. I strongly recommend Visiting Museum of the Mummies of Guanajuato if the pictures in this post do not look disturbing to you.
