Guachimontones is one of the coolest places I have visited. Have you read about crop circles? Guachimontones Archaeological site look just like crop circles from the air. In a matter of fact, it is one of the conspiracy theories behind the pyramids. Being close to Guadalajara, Guachimontones is one of must see places that makes a great half-day trip from the city. Here is my list of Tips for visiting Guachimontones.
TIPS FOR VISITING GUACHIMONTONES FROM GUADALAJARA
How to get to Guachimontones – hire a private driver.
You can take a bus from Guadalajara central bus station to Guachimontones, then walk from the bus station to the site and the entire trip one way will cost you about $10 and will take about 2 hours. I strongly suggest hiring a private driver with a car. The driver will pick you up from the hotel, take you to the site and bring you back in town. I asked hotel for a recommendation and the arrange it for me. I paid total of 140$ for the entire day. My driver took me to Guachimontones , Ajijic and then later the same driver took me to the airport.
How much time to spend in Guachimontones?
The site is fairly small, so you don’t need more that 3-4 hours to spend there. I spent 2 hours there and it was enough to walk around the pyramids and learn about Teuchitlan Tradition history in the visitor center.
Wear comfortable shoes.
The entire site is covered by grass that can get super wet in the morning. I spent about an hour walking around the site and exploring the pyramids. By the time I got to the visitor center, my sneakers were soaking wet. I regret not bringing my gore-tex hiking shoes.
Best time to visit Guachimontones
The weather in Jalisco is great year round, so you can visit any time. I suggest visiting in the morning. I got there by 10.30 and had the entire site to myself with only one group that I met on my way back to the visitor center. When I got back to the parking lot, more people were arriving to the site.
What to bring to Guachimontones.
There is a small souvenir shop on site where you can buy water and souvenirs. I strongly suggest to bring water with you to save the time if your time in Guachimontones is limited.
Here is the list of things I suggest to bring:
- Water.
- Sunscreen. Do not underestimate Mexican sun. I was visiting the site late September and it was super humid and gloomy, yet I managed to get a little sun burn.
- Snacks. There is no restaurant on site, so pack some snacks and food and bring it with you.
Hire a guide or join a tour.
Unlike Teotitlan and other larger sites, Guachimontones is fairly small, so you don’t need a guide and can easily explore the site on your own. If you opt in for a tour, there are several tours depart daily from the visitor center, so check their official site for exact time of tours departure .
