Things to do in Belize City- One day in Belize city

One day in Belize City

Belize City is a capital of Belize and the largest city in the country.

Best time to visit Belize.

While the weather is Belize is warm year-round, Belize has dry and rainy season like GuatemalaCosta Rica and other Central American countries. Since snorkeling and diving is a priority for most Belize visitors, I suggest visiting the country during dry season, February to mid-May. Expect to see some crowds as Belize is a very popular diving destination

Belize Currency

Local currency is Belize Dollar(BZD), but US dollars accepted in a lot of places. It is a good idea to have some local currency with you as the prices in BZD are slightly cheaper.

Is it safe to visit Belize City?

It is safe to move around in touristy areas during the day as well, however there are areas to avoid in Belize City.  Explore the city during the day and send evenings in the resort or restaurants closer to resort areas.

Exercise basic caution at all the time when walking around Belize City, be aware and alert all the time. Belize city is an interesting travel destination and you can fully enjoy it if you follow safety travel rules.

Things to do in Belize City

Visit St. John Cathedral.

Located at the north side of  Belize city center St. John Cathedral is a tall brick building visible from many parts of the city.  The church is only open for the service and we were not able to get in. The only way to see the church inside is to attend the service or get inside  right after the service. As walk around the building look close at the huge wooden doors decorate with detailed carvings. St. John Cathedral is a must-see building when visiting Belize City.

Visit Belize Government House.

Belize Government house is beautiful white colonial building located on the shore right across St. John cathedral. Built in the beginning of XIX century, the building originally served as a British Governor residence and later the residence of Belize governor.  Later, the building was renamed into “Belize House of Culture” and became a national museum. The renovation that took several years officially completed and museum is open for visitors.

Visit Museum of Belize.

Small museum that offers a lot of information about colonial history of Belize, slavery and old Belize architecture. I was very pleased to learn that majority of expositions have English translation that is not very common in other Central American countries. The museum occupies old jail building. An hour to hour and a half will be enough to cover the museum.

Walk the Swing Bridge.

Swing Bridge of one of four bridges over Haulover Creek that connect south and north parts of Belize city. Swing Bridge is closest to the see and the port area.  As you walk on the bridge you can see water taxi station and boats docking station.

See Belize Sign.

Belize sign located on Seashore Drive in the North part of the city.

City signs become very popular Instagram spots nowadays. If you must have a picture of you near or on  Belize sign you can walk to the sign from City Center. Prepare yourself for fairly uneventful 40-45-minutes walk through local neighborhood. I suggest taking a taxi from the center to the sign, asking the driver to wait until you are done with your pictures and taking you back to the city center. This will save you about an hour and a half of time.
