History of Fioli Garden
The garden and the house were built by Mr. and Mrs. William Bowers Bourn II, who were prominent San Francisco socialites and entrepreneurs. They purchased the property in 1915 and began construction of the house and gardens shortly thereafter. The name “Filoli” was derived from the first two letters of the words “Fight for a just cause; Love your fellow man; Live a good life.” The estate was passed down to several generations of the Bourn family until it was donated to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1975.
