Island Hopping: Which Hawaii Island Should You Visit First?

Hawaii is made up of eight main islands, each with its own unique culture, landscape, and attractions. Here is a description of each island.

Big Island

Hawaii Island (also known as the Big Island) is the largest of the islands, Hawaii Island is home to Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, as well as stunning black sand beaches, lush rainforests, and rolling hills. You can explore the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, go snorkeling in Kealakekua Bay, or hike to the top of Mauna Kea.

Maui

Maui Known for its stunning beaches, Maui is a popular destination for surfers, sunbathers, and nature lovers. You can drive the scenic Road to Hana, watch the sunrise at Haleakala National Park, or go snorkeling at Molokini Crater.

Oahu

Home to the state capital of Honolulu and the famous Waikiki Beach, Oahu is a bustling island with a mix of urban and natural attractions. You can explore Pearl Harbor, hike to the top of Diamond Head, or surf the waves at North Shore.

Kauai

Nicknamed the Garden Isle, Kauai is known for its lush tropical vegetation, towering cliffs, and stunning waterfalls. You can hike the Na Pali Coast, take a boat tour of the Wailua River, or relax on the beaches of Poipu.

Molokai

A quieter and less developed island, Molokai is known for its rugged terrain and rich Hawaiian culture. You can hike the Halawa Valley, learn about traditional Hawaiian fishing practices, or explore the Kalaupapa National Historical Park.

Lanai

A small and secluded island, Lanai is known for its luxurious resorts, world-class golf courses, and pristine beaches. You can go hiking in the Garden of the Gods, snorkel at Hulopoe Bay, or take a sunset sail along the coast.

Niihau

The smallest of the inhabited Hawaiian islands, Niihau is privately owned and only accessible by invitation only. Visitors can participate in cultural activities with the island’s native Hawaiian residents, but access is extremely limited.

Kahoolawe

A small, uninhabited island, Kahoolawe was used for target practice by the US military for many years and is now being restored to its natural state. Visitors are not currently allowed on the island, but there are plans for limited access in the future.

Which Hawaii Island Should You Visit First

While each of the Hawaiian Islands has its own unique attractions, there are certain islands that are better suited for certain activities.

Maui is a great destination for snorkeling, with its clear waters and abundance of marine life. Molokini Crater is a popular spot for snorkeling and scuba diving, and you can also swim with sea turtles at many of Maui’s beaches.

Kauai is known for its stunning natural beauty and is an excellent destination for hiking. The island has a variety of trails that offer stunning views of its waterfalls, canyons, and coastline. The Kalalau Trail on the Na Pali Coast is a particularly challenging but rewarding hike. Kauai is my favorite island and Poipu beach is one of my favorite places in the world.

Oahu is the most popular island for nightlife, with its bustling city of Honolulu and famous Waikiki Beach. You can enjoy a variety of restaurants, bars, and nightclubs, as well as cultural attractions like the Polynesian Cultural Center.

Finally, the Big Island of Hawaii is home to Mauna Kea, the highest mountain in the world when measured from its base on the ocean floor. You can drive up to the summit to stargaze or explore the observatories, or they can hike the trails in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to see the island’s active volcanoes.

Ultimately, the best island to visit depends on your interests and preferences. All of the islands offer unique experiences and attractions, so it’s worth considering what activities you want to do before deciding on a destination.
