Hiking Little Wild Horse Canyon to Bell Canyon: Our Experience
We did the full Little Wild Horse Canyon to Bell Canyon loop in late November during one of our road trips to Utah. This hike is fantastic and great for the whole family.
We did it with our 7-year-old, who absolutely loved the first part, Little Wild Horse Canyon, walking through the slot canyon. When we got out of the canyon to the wash, it became a bit boring for a while, but with some snacks and word play, we managed to finish the hike.
The Bell Canyon part of the hike isn’t as exciting as Little Wild Horse Canyon.
Also, be aware of a 6-foot drop at the Bell Canyon entrance, where you might need to help kids get down. So, if you’re hiking with kids, plan for some extra assistance there.
Overall, the hike was great, but if you’re short on time, you can opt to do just the first part, Little Wild Horse Canyon. Then, turn around to retrace your steps back. This part of the hike offers the most thrilling slot canyon experience and is perfect for a shorter outing if time is limited. The narrow passages and towering cliffs make for an exhilarating adventure, showcasing the unique geology of Utah’s desert landscapes. It’s a memorable experience that’s worth the visit, especially for families or anyone looking to explore the stunning natural formations of the region.
How to Get to Little Wild Horse trailed
The Little Wild Horse Canyon Trailhead is the starting point for the Little Wild Horse Canyon and Bell Canyon Loop hike. It is located close to Goblin Valley State Park. To get to the trail parking lot you will need to take take I-15 exit 149 toward Price and follow US-6 eastbound for approximately 50 miles. Turn left onto the signed road for Goblin Valley State Park and follow the paved road for about 5 miles, then turn right onto a dirt road. In about another 5 you will see a sign for the Little Wild Horse Canyon Trailhead.
The dirt road to the trailhead is passable by most vehicles, but it can be rough in places and may be difficult to navigate in inclement weather. The trailhead has a parking area and a restroom, but there are no other facilities or services available, so be sure to bring plenty of water and supplies.

Little Wild Horse Canyon Trailhead
The trailhead for the Little Wild Horse Canyon and Bell Canyon Loop is located at the Little Wild Horse Canyon Trailhead, which is accessed via the dirt road that leads to the San Rafael Swell. The trailhead has a parking area and a restroom.
Little Wild Horse Canyon
The first section of the hike is through Little Wild Horse Canyon. This section is a narrow and winding slot canyon that requires some scrambling and climbing over rocks. The walls of the canyon are smooth and colorful, with interesting formations and patterns. The canyon is approximately 3.5 miles long. It can take 1-2 hours to complete, depending on your pace and level of experience.
You can turn around here and go back to the parking lot of continue to the Bell Canyon to make it a loop.
Dry Wash
After exiting Little Wild Horse Canyon, you will hike for about 1.5 miles through a dry wash, which is a flat and sandy area with sparse vegetation. The wash can be hot and exposed, so it’s important to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
Bell Canyon
The next section of the hike is through Bell Canyon, which is a wider and less steep canyon than Little Wild Horse. The canyon has interesting rock formations and colorful walls, and it offers scenic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The trail through Bell Canyon is well-marked and easy to follow, and it is approximately 2.5 miles long.
Bell Canyon Trail
After exiting Bell Canyon, you will hike for about 1 mile on the Bell Canyon Trail. It is a wide and well-maintained trail that leads back to the Little Wild Horse Canyon Trailhead. The trail offers scenic views of the San Rafael Swell and the surrounding landscape, and it is a gradual descent with occasional switchbacks.
Ending Point
The hike ends at the Little Wild Horse Canyon Trailhead, where you can relax and enjoy the scenery, or continue on to explore other nearby trails.
