With population over two million people, Guatemala City is the largest city in Central America. While Guatemala City is not the most popular tourist destination in Guatemala, I would recommend spending couple of days in this city exploring museums, city center and surroundings. Here is my list of Guatemala City Travel Tips.

Is it safe to walk around Guatemala City?

In my opinion it is totally safe to explore the city center and museums during the day. My suggestion is to exercise basic caution, be aware of your surroundings, do not carry a lot of cash and just follow the standard safety rules.

Getting around the city.

While public transportation including buses and trains are quite popular, the easiest and fastest way to get around the city in my opinion is taxi.

How to get to Guatemala City

The city is about 15 mins from the airport. You can pay for taxi inside the airport, the tariff is based on the zone(I paid 14$ to get to  the hotel located in Zone 1).

 Guatemala City Zoning

The city consists of 25 zones. Some zones considered safer than others. Metropolitan Cathedral, Presidential Palace, National Library, Market and some other points of interest located in Zone 1.

How many days in Guatemala City?

I would recommend spending 2 full days in the city. This will allow you to spend one day in historic City Center and visit couple of museums during your second day. I spent just one day there and feel like it was not enough time to visit museums.

Where to stay in Guatemala City.

I suggesting selecting hotel located close to Guatemala City Historic District. Pan American hotel was my choice. Built before World War II, the hotel has a beautiful vintage atmosphere. We arrive late evening and the restaurant was packed with locals.
