Castro Neighborhood history
The Castro neighborhood in San Francisco has a rich and storied history, particularly in relation to LGBTQ+ culture and civil rights. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the area was predominantly a working-class Irish and Scandinavian neighborhood. However, in the 1960s and 1970s, the neighborhood underwent a significant transformation when it became a hub for the LGBTQ+ community.
During this time, the Castro became a safe haven for LGBTQ+ individuals who faced discrimination and persecution elsewhere. The neighborhood became a place where people could openly express their identities and form a close-knit community. In 1977, Harvey Milk, a gay rights activist and one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States, was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Milk’s election was a historic moment for the LGBTQ+ community and solidified the Castro’s place as a center of LGBTQ+ rights and activism.
Throughout the years, the Castro has remained a vibrant and inclusive neighborhood, home to a diverse population and a thriving LGBTQ+ community.
